KKI x Ching Kai

Paper visual artist Ching Kai creates paper desserts serveware and installation for curated tea-time desserts set

In 2022, Ching Kai collaborated with KKI Dessert Studio to create a paper installation and serveware for their seasonal curated tea-time desserts, featuring eight unique creations. The installation drew inspiration from Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai’s yearning for a simpler life in the mountains, as expressed in his poetry. This vision materialized as an abstract, mountainous paper landscape that served as both a centerpiece and functional serveware for KKI’s exquisite desserts.

The project challenged traditional notions of practicality in food presentation. Paper, a fragile and absorbent material, was used as the direct surface for serving desserts—a bold departure from conventional reusable serveware designed to avoid staining. By allowing customers to eat directly from the paper art, Ching Kai and KKI broke conventions, offering a unique sensory experience where diners engaged with art as part of their meal.

Suspended above the paper landscape were large paper structures resembling clouds, symbolizing emotions that often remain concealed, floating unnoticed in the air. Together, the mountains and clouds completed the poetic imagery, creating an immersive environment that blended culinary artistry with Ching Kai’s innovative paper creations. This collaboration pushed the boundaries of both functional design and artistic expression, leaving a lasting impression on KKI’s patrons.
